About

Karla Starr's first book, Can You Learn to Be Lucky? Why Some People Seem to Win More Often Than Others, was a Fast Company best book of 2018. She co-authored her second book, Making Numbers Count: The Art and Science of Communicating Numbers, with award-winning Stanford professor Chip Heath.

Starr and her work have been featured in publications and outlets including NPR, CBS Sunday Morning, The Atlantic, Slate, Popular Science, and The Guardian; she is the recipient of an award for the Best Science/Health story from the Society of Professional Journalists.

She helps teams see the invisible systems keeping them stuck, including how power dynamics inhibit coordination.

The author, keynote speaker, and consultant advises organizations worldwide from her home in Portland, Oregon, where she spends 50% of her time patting herself on the back for developing this website and 50% of her time wondering how to get this blue box a little bit lower without breaking it all.
